Chinese acrobats to take the stage
Combining award-winning acrobatics, traditional dance, spectacular costumes, ancient and contemporary music and theatrical techniques to present a show of breathtaking skill and spellbinding beauty, the Golden Dragon Acrobats are entertaining for the whole family. They will present a show at 8 p.m. Saturday at SUNY College at Geneseo. The Chinese touring company's 25 members are athletes, actors and artists who have studied and trained for their craft since early childhood. Juggling, balancing and spinning are taken to the next level, often done simultaneously and accompanied by feats of contortion and gymnastics. Visit geneseo.edu.
Strong Museum plans ball of a weekend
The ball, Big Wheel and Game Boy are the newest additions to the National Toy Hall of Fame at the Strong National Museum of Play. The museum plans special events for the induction weekend. It will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Events include a presentation by Scott Eberle, vice president for interpretation, at 1 p.m. both days. Eberle also will sign copies of his book, "Classic Toys of the National Toy Hall of Fame." Visit museumofplay.org.
Fine Craft Show at MAG
The Memorial Art Gallery's ninth annual Fine Craft Show features one-of-a-kind and limited-edition works by 42 master craft artists. The show hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 each day. Participating artists Linda Huey, Loraine Cooley and Raphaela McCormack will offer presentations Sunday. The weekend also includes a preview party from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. On the big screen
Cameron Diaz stars in "The Box," about a suburban couple who receive a wooden box as a gift from a mysterious stranger. They learn that opening it and pushing its button will bring them $1 million but also cause the death of someone they don't know. The film also features James Marsden and Syracuse's own Frank Langella. Also opening Friday is "A Christmas Carol," an animated retelling of Charles Dickens' classic novel about a Victorian-era miser taken on a journey of self-discovery and redemption by several mysterious Christmas apparitions. Maroon 5 to play RIT
Grammy Award-winning rock band Maroon 5 plays Rochester Institute of Technology's Gordon Field House at 8 p.m. Friday. The band's hits include "Harder to Breathe," "This Love," "She Will Be Loved" and "Sunday Morning." The original bandmates were in a garage band together while in high school in California. Van Cliburn medalist debuts with RPO
Haochen Zhang, the 19-year-old winner of the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will make his debut with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra this weekend. He will perform Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. Arild Remmereit will be guest conductor. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and 8 p.m. Saturday. Celebrating children's literature
Meet favorite children's authors at the Rochester Children's Book Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Monroe Community College. More than 40 local and national children's book authors and illustrators are slated to attend, including Steven Kellogg, James Howe, Michele Knudsen, Rebecca Stead and Newbery Medal winner Linda Sue Park.
