Fairport Canal Days
By KELLEN BECK
As the warmth of June comes around once again, Fairport Canal Days returns for another weekend packed with local food, music and art.
The dubbed “jazz festival before the Jazz Festival” is a family-friendly weekend hotspot full of different vendors and activities. Over 200 artisans, 40 live bands and 40 food vendors will be in the village for the 37th canal festival. Like last year’s Canal Days, the majority of music performances will be jazz, including Chet Catallo & The Cats and the Perinton Concert Band. The event kicks off Friday night with live music and a chicken barbecue.
The Erie Canal that runs through the village of Fairport helped put the town on the map when it was built in the 1820s and served as a major transportation route. While the canal is now mostly used for recreational boating and fishing, it has remained an important landmark and source of tourism in the area.
Fairport Canal Days has long been a popular festival in Greater Rochester, its website boasting over 200,000 visitors annually.
