Extreme Mammals Exhibition

"Extreme Mammals: The Biggest, Smallest and Most Amazing Mammals of All Time" opens Friday at the Rochester Museum & Science Center. Visitors can come face-to-face with a wondrous array of extraordinary creatures, including spectacular specimens from the American Museum of Natural History. The exhibition examines the ancestry and evolution of numerous species through fossils, skeletons, vivid mammal reconstructions as well as objects from RMSC collections. Species range from huge to tiny, from speedy to sloth-like, and display characteristics such as oversized claws, fangs, snouts and horns. Visit rmsc.org.

 

 

Laser-light show at planetarium
The RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium's "Holiday Laser" show, a seasonal tradition, can be seen this week and next; it runs through Jan. 2. This year's show is 100 percent music, presenting favorite holiday songs back-to-back without a break, choreographed with dancing laser light against the starry background of the planetarium sky. Indoor men's soccer
No plans for tonight? The Rochester Lancers, fresh off their 18-14 win over the Syracuse Silver Knights last Saturday, will welcome the Norfolk SharX to the Blue Cross Arena at 7 p.m. Rochester will remain at home on Tuesday, playing host to the Milwaukee Wave in a 7 p.m. matchup. On the big screen
In Steven Spielberg's animated movie "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn," Tintin and Captain Haddock set off on a treasure hunt for a sunken ship commanded by Haddock's ancestor. In "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," a journalist is aided by a young hacker in searching for a woman who has been missing for 40 years. It's based on Stieg Larsson's Millennium series of novels. "Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol" finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his new team going rogue to clear their organization's name. Find movie times.

On the small screen
Bring on the bowl games! If you want to see some nice, warm weather this week, tune in to the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl live from Honolulu at 8 p.m. Saturday on ESPN; Nevada plays Southern Miss. Find a schedule of bowl games at espn.com. It all culminates with the Allstate BCS National Championship Game on Jan. 9 in the Louisiana Superdome. Alabama's Crimson Tide will play the top-ranked LSU Tigers.

Hanukkah Hoopla
The Jewish Community Center is planning Hanukkah Hoopla on Sunday, and it is open to the community. The event will include family fitness activities, arts and crafts, movies, roller-skating and food. It kicks off at 9 a.m. Visit jccrochester.org.
