Taste of Rochester kicks off Friday
The Taste of Rochester festival features 40 of Rochester's best restaurants offering food samples to more than 100,000 people. The event also includes wines, beers, local and national musical performers and Rochester's best food and meal accessories on display. Hours are noon to 11 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday. Get there before 6:30 p.m. and admission is free! Music headliners are Starship starring Mickey Thomas on Friday night and Dennis DeYoung (left) of Styx on Saturday. For details, visit tasteofrochester.net.
Art blossoms at Sonnenberg
Arts at the Gardens, a juried fine art show and sale on the grounds of the Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park in Canandaigua, is Saturday and Sunday. The event features more than 100 artists showcasing paintings, prints, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, glass, woodwork, photography and other fine art. Wine and food also are offered. This is the 10th year of the show, and for the first time it will offer hands-on activities for children, compliments of Unique Toy Shop in Canandaigua. The Switch" is a about an unmarried woman (Jennifer Aniston) who turns to a turkey baster in order to become pregnant. Years later, she reunites with her best friend (Jason Bateman), who secretly replaced her preferred sperm sample with his own. "Lottery Ticket" is a comedy about a young man living in the projects who has to survive a three-day weekend after his opportunistic neighbors find out he's holding a winning lottery ticket worth $370 million. Gaslight presents 'Brighton Beach Memoirs'
Gaslight Theater Company presents the classic Neil Simon play "Brighton Beach Memoirs" at Temple B'rith Kodesh. Performances are at 7 p.m. today, 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. The story follows a 1930s family in Brooklyn's Brighton Beach neighborhood during a particularly trying week. The families of two Jewish sisters share a house, and times are hard. The coming-of-age story won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for best play, plus Tony and Drama Desk awards. For details, visit gaslighttheatercompany.com.
Get on board for Diesel Days
The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum in Rush plans to highlight the diesel locomotive during a two-day celebration Saturday and Sunday. Several of the museum's operating diesels will be running, from a small 45-ton switcher to large 1,000- and 1,200-horsepower road-switchers. Visitors can take locomotive and caboose rides, walk through a restored 1909 Erie Railroad depot and check out trolleys. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day for the event. Batavia plans city festival
The sixth annual "Summer in the City" festival will be held in downtown Batavia from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday. There will be more than 30 food and craft vendors, a great lineup of entertainment, a KidsZone and a Super Car Cruise with more than 400 cars and motorcycles. Musical performers include Elvis impersonator Terry Buchwald, Ghost Riders and Nik & The Nice Guys. Visit downtownbataviany.com for details.
Honoring Susan B. Anthony's legacy
It was 90 years ago that the 19th Amendment, also known as the "Susan B. Anthony Amendment," was added to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote in this country. What better place to mark this historic anniversary than the Susan B. Anthony House at 19 Madison St. in Rochester? Anthony moved to Rochester at age 29. On Saturday, there will be activities and vendors in the park on Madison Street and in the Carriage House, as well as tours of the Anthony House. Festivities begin at 11 a.m. in Susan B. Anthony Square, where a sculpture shows Anthony and Frederick Douglass having tea. Rep. Louise Slaughter will speak at the event. Visit susanbanthonyhouse.org.
